We understand that the cost of arranging a funeral can be a worry, particularly at an already difficult time.
Please don’t be afraid to talk to us about your budget or financial circumstances. Our Funeral Directors and arrangers are here to help you understand the costs involved, discuss the choices available and provide information about financial support that you may be entitled to.
We believe every family should be able to arrange a dignified and meaningful funeral within their means. We offer a range of funeral options and will always explain the costs clearly, allowing you to make informed choices without feeling under pressure.
If you live in Scotland and are on a low income or receive certain benefits, you may be eligible for a Funeral Support Payment from Social Security Scotland. This is financial assistance towards the cost of a funeral and can be paid either to you or directly to your Funeral Director.
You or your partner may qualify if you receive one or more of the following:
You can also apply while you are waiting for a decision on an application for one of these qualifying benefits. Other eligibility conditions apply, including rules about responsibility for arranging and paying for the funeral.
Funeral Support Payment does not usually cover the full cost of a funeral, but it can provide valuable help towards the expense.
For an adult funeral, it can help towards burial, cremation, or hydrolysis fees, as well as other funeral expenses. The current standard contribution towards other funeral costs is £1,327.75 where there is no funeral plan. Assistance may also be available towards certain travel, transportation, documentation, and medical costs. The amount awarded will depend on individual circumstances and any accessible funds or other provision left by the person who has died.
You do not have to work everything out on your own.
If you think you may be eligible for Funeral Support Payment, please speak to your Funeral Director or Arranger. With your permission, we can provide information to Social Security Scotland about the funeral and help you understand what information may be required as part of your application. Social Security Scotland specifically allows an applicant to give consent for their funeral director to speak to them about the application.
Applications can be made online, by telephone or by post and should normally be made after the person has died and within six months of the funeral.
